About the event

NOTE: There is a small change to the original plan for this event due to the rail strike on 6th April. The hike will go from Hathersage to Castleton rather than Edale.

Meeting at Castleton visitor centre car park, this is a point-to-point Wayfarer where we'll be hopping on the bus and heading to Hathersage for our journeys start! (Full details of bus timings etc. will be in your confirmation email after booking.)

This fantastic route from Hathersage to Castleton will explore some of the Peak District Birthday Bash 35km & 70km race routes, making this wayfarer perfect for those that have entered the PD Birthday Bash and are keen to get familiar with some of the route. Equally, this Wayfarer is open to anyone wanting to explore a beautiful area of the Peak District without the pressure of running. As a hike we'll be moving at a relaxed pace, suitable for all in the group.

Heading out of Hathersage towards Leadmill, we begin with a steady climb towards Highlow and onto Smelting Hill to warm us up! Going up-and-down for a while, we eventually come to Bradwell Moor and Old Moor, reaching the highest point of our hike. As we join the Limestone Way, we can take in the beautiful surroundings of Mam Tor, Lose Hill and Win Hill. From here, we descend into Castleton!

As well as getting a fantastic day out exploring, there will be opportunity to learn from Matt, who is a highly experienced Mountain Leader. So whether you’re looking for a lovely day out in the safe hands of people who live and breathe the outdoors, or you’d like to gain experience and knowledge for your own big mountain adventures in the future, this is the Wayfarer Hike for you!

Although there will be some flexibility on the route if conditions are harsher than we’d normally expect on a winter day in the hills, expect a committing, challenging route and no lenience on kit requirements.

Distance: If all goes to plan, we'll cover approximately 11-miles across some challenging rock and tricky terrain and ascend around 2,500 feet.

Kit requirements - Please note that you'll need to bring the below with you in order to take part in this event and there will no exceptions as this will be a challengeing, wintery day out;

  • Off-road / trail running / walking boots
  • Clothes suitable for the weather conditions, plus additional warm layer for emergencies
  • Waterproof jacket, with hood and taped seams
