Race Details

Brooksie's Bash is a trail race covering 10 country miles in a beautiful part of South Derbyshire, starting and finishing  in the grounds of the spectacular Foremarke  Hall.

As well as the main 10-mile race, there is also a 5k race, and family friendly walk held in conjunction with the Derbyshire Mind 'Enjoying Derbyshire' project.  In addition, following their success in previous years, there will be some fun activities for all the family alongside the races.

Our mission is to provide a good value event which is challenging but suitable for all abilities from the recreational runner looking for their next challenge to experienced racers. The event is a fundraiser for local charity, Derbyshire Mind, so you will also be contributing to a great cause.

If you haven't taken part in an off-road event before it is a great opportunity to come and have a go in a friendly and supportive environment...

Guided category in the 10-mile race.

We are offering this option at no additional charge to anyone who is apprehensive about the distance, their pace, or running off-road in a new environment. They will be accompanied by one our experienced trail runners acting as guide.  The guide(s) will run at a pace that is comfortable for everyone in their group, rather than pacing anyone to a good time.  To request this option please email us at info@peakrunning.co.uk or use the contact form below..

Technical T-Shirts as an optional extra.

As part of our aim to provide a good value event, we are keen to keep the race entry fee low. But, because we know race t-shirts are popular, we are offering a high quality Brooksie's Bash technical shirt as an optional extra. These can be purchased, as part of the entry process for any entry submitted before 14th June 2019, for £14

Race Route

The start and finish area are in front of the main hall at Foremarke. From the start the race will do a short loop within the school grounds before leaving along the track to the west. It will then consist of a single anti-clockwise loop via Ticknall and Staunton Harold Reservoir, before arriving back into the school grounds from the east.

The vast majority of the route is on unsurfaced footpaths and bridleways. However, there are some short sections of road (about half a mile in total) and a small number of other road crossings.

The advertised distances of 10 miles and 5km has been measured by GPS enabled watch, so therefore can only be considered approximate. Due to the off-road nature of the route it is not practical to have an officially measured and certified distance.

The 5k course takes in part of the route used by the 10-mile race. Most of it is on unsurfaced footpaths but there is a short section of road (about 250 yards long) in the second half.

There are a variety of underfoot conditions and hazards such as uneven surfaces, tree roots, rocks, mud and wooden surfaces on stiles. Participants must  take care not to trip or slip, particularly if surfaces are wet.

Guided Training Runs

One of our objectives for Brooksie's Bash is to make it doable for runners at all levels. We particularly want to encourage people that haven’t competed off-road before to come and discover the joys of running on the wonderful networks of trails we have in South Derbyshire.

For this reason, we will be putting on a series of guided training runs in the area in the lead up to the race itself, starting in mid-April. These, which have proved very popular, will make the most of the increasing hours of daylight in the evenings, so not to infringe on your weekends. They will take in parts of the race route and distances will start at around 5k (3 miles). They’ll be led by qualified coaches / run-leaders, who will also be able to give advice on training etc., and be geared to suit all running paces.

The cost of each run is just £3 and they are FREE for any of our volunteers who will be marshalling or carrying out other duties on race day.

The dates are shown below and you can save time on the night by booking in advance here.

Please note the meeting point for training runs will be the car park next to Ticknall Village Hall (7 Rose Ln, Ticknall, DE73 7JW) NOT the race venue, Foremarke Hall.

Meeting place:

Ticknall Village Hall

Race Venue

The race starts and finishes in the spectacular grounds of Foremarke Hall School, near Milton, South Derbyshire. The post code is DE65 6EJ.  If driving, please enter the school grounds via the main entrance through the stone gateway. Do not use the unsurfaced track along the western side of the school.

Be aware that there are private residences within the school grounds. Please do not block access and avoid unnecessary noise.

Derbyshire Mind

Once again the event will raise funds for local charity Derbyshire Mind, to help them support people affected by mental health issues.

Their team will be on-site throughout the day to support the event and pass on their appreciation for your efforts in raising funds by participating.

Running and Mental Health

One of the reasons for supporting Derbyshire Mind is that we're passionate about the benefits exercise can contribute to a person's mental health.

Research has shown that running, and other kinds of physical exercise, have a positive impact on mental health. This is leading to more and more health professionals prescribing exercise to people experiencing mental health problems, instead of or alongside medication or talking treatments.

As well as releasing natural endorphins that make us feel good, using running to get fit and achieve personal goals, is a great way to improve confidence and self-esteem. Doing it as part of a club or group gets people out in the fresh air, which also has a positive impact on mood, and helps to make new friends in a supportive atmosphere.

Funds raised by the race go directly to the 'Enjoying Derbyshire' project, which gets people out and about gaining from these benefits in various parts of Derbyshire

Meet Amaris, Our Race Ambassador

Amaris enjoyed the first edition of the race in 2016 so much, last year she stayed up late to make sure she got entry number 1.

Discovering running a few years ago has played a massive part in helping her manage her own mental health, and we hope that her story will inspire others to do the same. Click on the links below to read her blog.

Sponsors and Supporters

The Derby Runner is a specialist running store, catering for all levels of running, ranging from jogging for fitness to serious marathon running, and from track and field athletics to fell running.

Rob Jefferies and his team at the shop, are a key part of the local running community, and provide a great deal of help and support which is vital to the success of Brooksie's Bash, and our ability to maximise the funds we raise for Derbyshire Mind.  As well as visible things like the use of the start/finish arch and other equipment, they provide a lot of other support and advice behind the scenes.
